On Saturday, December 9, 2023, the Long Beach Model Congress hosted its annual domestic congress! This day is not only full of debating but also activities that allow kids from other schools to interact with one another. Model Congress is an extracurricular club that eight school districts on Long Island offer to their students. This club gives students a chance to engage in a role-playing simulation of the United States Congress. The weekend event also includes meals, entertainment, and awards, all organized by the students, but specifically by the executive board.
For 2023, the General Chair is Lia Cardo (the reporter of this article), the Associate General Chair is Olivia Guille, the Delegate Chair is shared by Orly Keynan and Gabriella Moreira, and the Agenda Chair is Daniel Brenner. Together they worked to host another smooth running event.
Long Beach welcomed their guests with an opening ceremony in the auditorium, as seen in the picture above, and then they were broken up into small groups — or committees — in classrooms. Long Beach chaired successful and respectful committees and led debates regarding a mix of foreign and domestic issues.
The following schools came to debate: Lawrence, Oceanside, New Rochelle, Hewlett, Tri-D (Wantagh and Seaford), Herricks, and East Meadow. The winner of this year's congress was Oceanside, who had the most awards from committee sessions of debating. This event was a success, especially following Long Beach’s win on October 21st, and a good preview to the next congresses to come this year.
